Frequently Asked Questions

What is the process for developing a custom solution, from initial concept and design to final production?

Flexcon’s process is collaborative and straightforward. We start with a consultation to understand your needs, move to a 3D CAD design for your approval, create a prototype for testing, and then proceed with production tooling and manufacturing once the design is perfected.

What are the different manufacturing processes available (e.g., injection molding, thermoforming, fabrication) and the pros and cons of each?

Flexcon offers a full range of processes. Injection molding is best for high-volume, high-precision parts. Thermoforming/Vacuum Forming is ideal for trays and lighter-duty parts with lower tooling costs. Fabrication from corrugated plastic is perfect for custom sizes with little tooling costs. We’ll recommend the best process for your application and budget.

What are the typical tooling costs and lead times associated with a custom mold?

Tooling costs and lead times vary significantly based on the complexity and size of the part, with lead times anywhere from 3-4 weeks to multiple months.

What range of materials, colors, and additives (e.g., ESD, UV-inhibitors) can we choose from?

Flexcon Container has a vast library of materials, including polypropylene, HDPE, ABS, and polycarbonate. We can match any custom color and include additives for special properties like ESD protection, flame retardancy, UV resistance, or anti-microbial features.

Can you create a 3D-printed prototype for fit and function testing before we commit to tooling?

Yes, Flexcon actually recommends it for certain of projects. A 3D-printed prototype is a fast and cost-effective way to validate the design, test the fit with your components, and make any necessary adjustments before investing in expensive production tooling.
